Terry Fox

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

"Terry Fox was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer treatment activist. After
losing his right leg to cancer at age 20, Terry decided to run from coast to coast to
raise money for cancer research. He ran an average of 42 km--the distance of a typical
marathon--per day. But the cancer spread to his lung and he was forced to abandon the run
after 143 days, having run 5,373 km. A few days later, Canada's CTV Network telecast an
impromptu telethon for cancer research and to keep Fox's Marathon of Hope going, raising
more than $10 million. Terry died just before his 23rd birthday. His Marathon of Hope
captured the nation's attention. The annual Terry Fox Run which takes place each September
in several countries has raised more than $400 million for cancer research." --Susan
